Mental
health is something that is very hard to measure since it cannot be directly
seen, unlike physical health. It is very intriguing how doctors, scientists,
and the like, measure mental health through these "instruments" that
was founded through techno-science. Using these instruments, the doctors can
then analyze the persons condition so they can diagnose that person to the “appropriate”
illness. This affects the persons mentality regarding their diagnosed illness
by having that validation that they have it and starting to incorporate it even
more in their life because they are cautious.
Back in
high school, I was diagnosed with mild depression due to my grandfather’s
sudden death. When the doctor confirmed my depression at that time, I felt that
depression ate up my life compared to when I was not diagnosed yet. At first, I was not
given any medication, but I had to go through mental therapy. It wasn’t when I was
at my lowest that they gave me prescription for anti-depressant pills. I honestly
relied on those pills because it helped me calmed myself down and was able to
control my thoughts. I still had to go to my therapist even though I am already
taking medications. But I felt like I am very grateful to those therapy
sessions because it prevented me from being addicted to medication.
Thanks for sharing all this. Brave and helpful.
