Despite being someone who has always thought that the idea of a higher power to be a little far-fetched, I think religion is an incredibly important aspect of human culture. Many people need faith as a source of happiness and motivation, and without it, many of them would become lost. My doubts stem from my own personal need for factual evidence as validation for a concept as complex as God, but I also believe that faith is a thought process that many people need.

More thoughts on science and religion
I'll start this by saying that I've never been religious. When I was a really young kid (pre-school age) I found church to be boring, and nothing that was said ever stuck with me. I only attended regularly for less than a year, as my family was living with my Lutheran grandma while my parents house hunted. As soon as we moved out, I no longer went due to my parents being non-religious themselves. Once I was old enough to actually engage in conversations about religion, I tended to avoid them. Currently, I don't consider myself to belong to any one belief system. I tend to lean towards an atheist way of thinking but I don't want to commit to this since I believe it's important to always keep an open discussion on faith versus science.

My life is somewhat similar to you, but I consider myself as agnostic. I don't believe in a God, per say, but there may be some higher spirit. I'm not exactly sure. My immediate family isn't very religious, but my other family members are very religious (my mom's side is very Hindu and my dad's side of the family is a mixture of Hindu or Christian). For some reason, religion has never been important to me, but I understand that religion means everything to other people. Although I'm not religious, and I also love science as a validation of things, I do support the people I love who need religion.
