Growing up I have given medication for either stomachaches, fevers, colds and all the minor sickness I could have. I was never a hug fan of taking Pepto-Bismol. Although it did looked nice, because of the pink liquid it had and because of the minty smell, it tasted horrible. I used to not care as much of the warnings it had at first, but later on I become more wise and needed to read the information that the medicine contain before actually consuming it. I decided to focus on Pepto-Bismol because is it a product that shows up in commercials a lot and it seen almost at any store that had over-the-counter drugs.
So as we all may know, Pepto-Bismol is a drug that allows you to relief from 5 symptom digestive. When we look into a drug, we tend to see the things that may help us to relief from, but never read it carefully on the warnings, side effects, or the "Do Not Use If..". As for this case, this drug become known through social media and began to be consumed because of the "#1 pharmacist recommended bran for upset stomachs". When taking or buying a drug, we tend to see them first by the convincing words it may have and by how much it known.

As we can see, there is much more information that needs to be read before even consuming the product. There is definitely characteristics that can make the product appealing to the buyers, from the color, flavor, substance and primarily the price. As Paige addressed on her blog, brand is not always the case to feeling better. It all comes from all the things it may contain and the effectiveness it has. There can be negative effects if you don't fully follow the warning description, and that's when our mistakes comes in. In ads that I have seen this product to be in, seems to be for clients who either ate too much or not in a good condition, and by taking this product it can solve the problem from stomachaches, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, or nausea. It seems to be that this product is directly 'recommended' to those who had consumed food and want to feel better after something not being good to the stomach. There is many way in which this become known to people, to future consumers, number one instrument that has been used to promote this has been through TV commercials. In terms of economic, this product will try to make anything possible to make it appealing to the consumer because if it doesn't look too appealing or convincing to the person, then there will be no incoming money from it. I'm pretty sure that there has been other competitions happening that are similar to this product to relief from the digestive symptoms. Now as consumers, it is up to us to either believe the convincing words or the appealing characteristics or by the actual effectiveness it has on solving the problem we may have in our body.
I appreciate that you mentioned it was pink and smell mint-y. None of the active ingredients in Pepto-Bismol are pink and they definitely do not smell mint-y. Not only is the brand constructed to be appealing to a consumer, but the actual liquid itself has been tailored with properties that have nothing to do with the medical functionality. The company wants to make us desire the thing we need.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting how you speak about this tendency we have to overlook the warnings and side effects carefully. I do agree with that, and I see ads as influencing people's mentality towards these drugs/medicines in terms of making them overlook the potential concerns that might arise when taking such products. This is something that is also a result of trademarks and how they can be very misleading in how we perceive and interpret the effectiveness of these drugs. And it also makes me consider how companies might manipulate the fact that when people purchase such products, like Pepto Bismol, they are in desperate need of some relief, so their perceptions may be skewed by their current state of pain... it's like how they say you shouldn't go grocery shopping when hungry.
ReplyDeleteSo much of that info is government-mandated, and written in a way that pretty much NOBODY is gong to read or track it. So does it actually WORK? (CF: 'regulatory capture.')
