What's the deal with buffets?

Over this break, I had gone to a buffet with a couple of my friends. It is awesome to be able to go to a restaurant and eat whatever you’re in the mood for, and however much of it you want. You could be there forever! To someone like me, a buffet is like paradise.

Although I love buffets, I always regret going to them afterwards. I always eat too much and feel sick. Once I am on my 5th plate of food, my body starts to feel the after effects of all the previous plates I have eaten. Why do I do this to myself? Why do I eat so much? Well for one, I want to make sure I am getting my money’s worth. I want to make sure I didn’t pay $20 for only 1 or 2 plates of food.

How does this associate with what we have been learning in class? For one, buffets are telling us it’s okay to eat whatever you want. It is all open and you get to eat whatever you feel like. Another big part of buffets is that you really don’t know what’s in your food. You just read the sign that it is a chicken lo mein, but other than that you have no clue what went into the making of that meal. But you don’t go to a buffet if you care what’s in your food, which is part of the problem. We should care about what’s going into our bodies. Places like buffets and fast food can trick us into eating their food, but do we really know what we are eating? No we don't, and that is pretty scary.

Buffets are not a great idea to begin with however. How can we think that an all you can eat place can be a good thing? They encourage you to overeat! That is a terrible thing! We should be taking care of our bodies. Overeating is not good for your body and can encourage other bad habits with food.

Why do we think buffets are good? Why do we let them trick us into over eating? We think it’s a good deal. We think that we are going to get our money’s worth, so we plan to overeat when we go to begin with. People also like buffets because of the variety of food and because they are very fast and convenient. Needless to say, I will be viewing buffets differently from now on, and I am definitely less likely to go again. Overeating is never good and knowing what is in your food is now much more important to me.

  1. 'FIFTH plate of food'? Girl, what's happening here? (said the guy who treats 'all you can eat' as an empirical question...).
