FaceTime is my best friend

Before apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and FaceTime existed, bumping into an old high school friend meant catching up because you haven’t seen or talked to them in some time. Now, we can keep tabs on old friends through various apps without the need to see them at a high school reunion. With just a click, I can check Facebook and see that people I went to high school with are getting engaged and having babies. Also, I can open Snapchat at 3 am and feel like I’m not alone, because my friend at UW-Madison is also up cramming for an exam.

Along with connecting with old friends, social media apps allow us to stay connected with people we want to actually be friends with. For 19 out the 21 years I’ve been alive, my sister has been my best friend. We did everything together, so when I decided to move out last summer before school started, I didn't know what to feel. I was excited because I was finally going to get my own room, but I was sad because I wouldn’t see my sister every day.

FaceTime was and is my favorite app because it allows me to video chat with my sister basically every day. If I want to tell her my day, I can just give her call. If I want to tell her about the cute guy I saw walking across the bridge, she’s just one click away. FaceTime has allowed me to keep in contact with my sister and make it feel like I never left home.

FaceTime has allowed my sister and I to sustain our friendship, but can I say that for other apps? Yes, you can keep up to date with what everyone posts on their social medias, but it doesn't mean you know everything there is to know about them. You only see what they allow you to see.

  1. Thanks for sharing Mai! I am also thankful for apps like facetime because it makes it possible for me to connect with members of my extended family that are spread out across the world.

  2. I can totally relate to this! One of my closest friend goes to school in California, and the only way we communicate is through FaceTime and messaging. Without these kind of apps, I would probably be sending him letters, otherwise it is hard to keep in touch with them. And I definitely agree with your last statement since we have Facebook, Twitter, Instaram, Snapchat, and such that let us know what others are doing without having to communicate with them.

  3. Hi Mai, I completely agree! Apps are a great way for us to catch up with people we haven't seen in days, months, years, whatever. It's really nice to have these apps and social media to stay in contact with friends and family, plus the convenience of having them on our cell phones and not just on our computers. One of my best friends lives on the East Coast for school and Facebook and Facetime make it really easy to keep up with each other's lives. I also have a bunch of family that live all over the country. It's really fun to see their pictures of their travels and of their kids when and see them all grow, even when they're thousands of miles away.
