There among us: Flat Earthers

It may seem surprising, but yes, there are actually quite a few people out there who believe in the Earth being flat. If you are interested in attending there is an international conference coming up where a bunch of Flat Earthers get together and discuss their finding. Here is the link:

However ridiculous this may seem, they have actually come up with some rather intense science behind the matter. For example, it has been deemed by the Flat Earth Society that Earth's day and night cycle is explained by redefining the position of the sun and moon, which are approved to be spheres, measuring 32 miles in diameter that move in 3,000 mile circles above the plane of the Earth. If you are wondering about stars, they have that covered too. Apparently stars move in a different plane about 3,100 miles up. Still following a 24-hour time cycle, the moon and sun illuminate different portions of the planet similar to spotlights in a sky. They have even come up with the "scientific" reasoning as to how the lunar eclipses form, thanks to a thing called an invisible "antimoon" that obscures the moon during these phases.

So what caused groups of people to start doubting the mainstream idea that the Earth was a sphere? Well Flat Earthers like to call it an alternative theory to the scientific method, it is called the Zetetic Method which aims to make logical deductions for empirical data. This often leads to ridiculous explanations as to why NASA has aimed to cover this up and/or how gravity and other planets work with the framed mindset of a flat Earth. For example, they believe that gravity doesn't exist, but rather that things just fall.

I believe that people are able to support the ideal that the Earth is flat due to the vagueness in the  explanations of how things "actually" work as well as in the reasoning behind why someone was trying to cover up the "truth" in the first place. The ability to believe anything this unusual and highly accepted by society is the ability to supply vague possible alternative explanations as to how things could work instead. Furthermore, it is easy to discredit anything released by the government and NASA by chalking it up to nothing more than fabrication. Despite the lack of scientific evidence behind some of the Flat Earther's "facts", many people are still able to continue to support the view due to their unyielding belief that outside authoritative figures are manipulative and deceitful often for monetary gains. Thus, any outside evidence that disproves the flat Earth theory could easily be cast off as just another lie by any member of the society. This defense mechanism only further perpetuates the survival of this, and other, absurd conspiracy theories.

  1. I'm not going to lie in which I've had multiple discussions within the last month about the flat earth theory. I actually know someone who believes in it, he claims there is science to back up the theory. Honestly, science can be vague at times, and it is easy to back up theories (kinda) with some scientific evidence. But I still don't agree with him and I do think he is a bit insane along with the others for believing in a flat earth.

  2. Hello! I liked how you brought up this conversation because in the past many of my friends have discussed this topic. I find it hard to believe that the world is flat because there has been probably millions of photos of the earth that may prove the earth to not be flat. There are not only photos but also videos that may prove to show the world is not flat. I'm sure it would be fairly easy to find photos and videos that show the earth is not flat through NASA or some other organization.

The Flat Earth Society on Facebook had ironically stated, "The Flat Earth Society has members all around the globe.". In response, someone commented "Say that again, but slower.".
